Preparing Competent, Committed, Professional Teachers for a Diverse, Democratic Society

On October 22nd and 23rd, the Education Department hosted prospective students interested in teaching for our second “Earn Your Apple” Visitation Day.  “We want you to really get to know us and understand the “core” of what we do with teacher education at Ohio Wesleyan,” Chair Dr. Amy McClure told the prospective students.  (The pun was greeted by groans from current students and faculty). The weekend began with a dinner in the Faculty Dining Room, followed by a talk from Kelsey Nugent (class of 06) who described her experiences as a first year teacher.  The group then watched Dangerous Minds, a move about teaching starring Michelle Pfeiffer at the historic Strand Theatre.  The following day students attended classes, worked with children at the Early Childhood Center and heard about community service opportunities like the Columbus Initiative, which are available to education students.  The day ended with lunch and a quiz game hosted by Dr. Katz.
