Preparing Competent, Committed, Professional Teachers for a Diverse, Democratic Society

Institutional Mission

Ohio Wesleyan University defines itself as a community of teachers  and students devoted to the free pursuit of truth.  It attempts to develop in its students qualities of intellect and character that will be useful no matter what they choose to do later in life.

The three educational objectives of an Ohio Wesleyan University education are:  to impart knowledge; to develop and enhance certain important capabilities of students; and to place education in the context of values.  To the extent that Ohio Wesleyan educates liberally, it fulfills its ultimate purpose of equipping students with knowledge, competence, and character for leadership, service, and continued learning in a complex and increasingly global society.

Mission of Teacher Education

Ohio Wesleyan has been educating teachers for more than 100 years.  This experience confirms our belief that the most creative and effective teachers are prepared at strong liberal arts colleges such as ours.

Our program emphasizes a solid theoretical base and practical experience.  From the first course onward, education students learn about the responsibilities and rewards of their profession by working directly with children in area schools, community centers, and in Ohio Wesleyan’s Early Childhood Center, a laboratory pre-school program.
